The former prime minister Giulio Andreotti was brought face-to-face yesterday with a Mafia turncoat who has accused him of greeting a Cosa Nostra godfather with a kiss at a secret meeting in 1987, Reuter reports from Rome.

Baldassare Di Maggio and Mr Andreotti confronted each other in the presence of Sicilian magistrates investigating the seven-times prime minister's alleged Mafia links. Di Maggio is one of the most important Mafia turncoats - his information led directly to the arrest in January of Mafia godfather Salvatore 'Toto' Riina after 23 years on the run. He has testified that Mr Andreotti, foreign minister at the time, met Riina six years ago in the Sicilian capital, Palermo.
