Anger at concert by Hitler singer, 104

By Claire Ellicott

Reviving a flagging musical career at the age of 104 might seem optimistic in the best of circumstances. When you've been criticised for performing for Adolf Hitler and being pictured with Nazi soldiers at Dachau concentration camp, it has to be near impossible. Undeterred, Johannes Heesters took to the stage in his native Netherlands this weekend for his first performance there in four decades.

The world's oldest performing artist according to Guinness World Records, Heesters rattled through a medley of hits including "The Merry Widow", the German song that made him famous, as well as the Dutch classic "There by the windmill".

Not everyone was enjoying the comeback. Around 50 protesters gathered outside the De Flint theatre in Amersfoort to voice their disgust. "He kept singing for the Nazi regime, for the Wehrmacht, and he earned millions," Piet Schouten, a protest organiser, told the Dutch broadcaster NOS.

Heesters began a successful career in Amsterdam in the 1920s. Although he has never been accused of being a Nazi propagandist and was allowed to continue to perform by the Allies after the Second World War, he is still a controversial figure.
