Further details have emerged about the victims of the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils. There have been fatalities from Italy, France, the US, Belgium and Spain itself.

Fourteen people were killed in total in vehicle ramming attacks, and more than 120 were injured – 17 critically. Over 60 remained in hospital on Friday afternoon.

It is feared more deaths could be announced in the coming days.

Belgian Elke Vanbockrijck was the mother of two keen young footballers.

Elke Vanbockrijck was described as ‘always positive’

Arnould Partoens, president of the KFC Heur Tongeren football team, said Ms Vanbockrijck was at the club “nearly every day”, ferrying her 10 and 14-year-old boys back and forth to training and matches.

“She was not negative. She was always positive,” he said, adding the team would hold one minute of silence before every match and training session this weekend.

Spaniard Francisco Lopez Rodriguez, 57, originally from the town of Lanteira, Granada, was also among the dead. His wife, Roser, was also badly injured, according to local media.

Two other Spanish nationals are believed to have died.

Another Spaniard was the sole fatality in Cambrils. The death of Ana María Suárez was confirmed by the Spanish Royal Family. Her husband, Roque Oriol, is reported to be in a serious condition in hospital.

"Our affection for her family," a tweet said. "Our desire for the recovery of the injured."

Italian Prime Minster, Paolo Gentiloni, confirmed on Twitter the death of two of his country’s citizens.

“Italy remembers Bruno Gulotta and Luca Russo and gathers tight around their families,” he said.

“Freedom will conquer the barbarianism of terrorism.”

Mr Gulotta, 35, was hailed in his hometown of Legnano as a hero for putting himself between the van and his six-year-old son and seven-month-old daughter as he strolled with his wife in the Spanish city.

Italian media reported that Russo, 25, held a university degree in engineering and lived in northern Italy. An Italian official said his girlfriend suffered fractures and remains hospitalised.

Californian Jared Tucker, 43, also died in the attack, his family told the New York Daily News.

"Everybody loved him," his father, Daniel Tucker, told the newspaper. "He's been a partner working with me since he was 16 years old ... All our customers love him. All people love him."

He was on his holiday along with his wife, Heidi Nunes-Tucker, celebrating their first wedding anniversary. The couple were separated during the attack.

Among the missing is a seven-year-old boy, Julian Alessandro Cadman, of dual British-Australian nationality.

Julian’s father Andrew Cadman, from Sydney, said he had spoken to his son only hours before he went missing. He is travelling to Barcelona to search for the boy.

His wider family have launched a social media campaign in a bid to find him.
