French police divers have recovered the body of British schoolgirl Bunmi Shagaya from a lake in France. The 11-year-old, who went missing on a school trip in north-east France this week, drowned in a shallow area of the lake designated for swimming.

Expectation that the waiting for Bunmi's family was over became heightened after intense activity among police divers at the edge of the Lac de Caniel, in a nature park near Dieppe. Drowning had been the most likely solution to the riddle of the Lambeth girl's disappearance, although police had also been investigating a possible abduction.

The girl's classmates from the Hillmead primary school in Brixton, south London, arrived home today. It was the school's first trip abroad and, although the teacher-pupil ratio was well within officially recommended limits, concerns have been voiced over the danger of such trips..
