A British woman has been beaten to death with a baseball bat on the holiday island of Tenerife.

The Foreign Office confirmed the woman's death last night but refused to name her until her family had been contacted.

Spanish police said they found the 28-year-old, who they identified only as Lisa M, lying in a pool of blood in the resort of Playa de las Americas, according to reports.

Officers went to the Pala Blanco housing development on the south coast of the Canary island just after 3am on Christmas Eve after a worried neighbour reported a violent row, the Daily Mail reported.

The victim, who lived on the island, had been beaten with a baseball bat. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries and died at 1pm.

Her British boyfriend, who has not been named but is also believed to live on Tenerife, was reportedly arrested following the woman's death.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national. Foreign Office staff are making contact with next of kin."
