Stephen Stables, 23, who was travelling abroad for the first time, was seriously ill in intensive care at a hospital in Izmir yesterday. The couple had gone on holiday with her brother, Adam Megoran, who is also believed to have been injured, her parents and uncle.

They were planning to make their first home together when they returned to Britain, Mr Stables's father, Michael, 44, said at his home in Spennymoor, Co Durham.

"Stephen doesn't know that Helen has died yet. When he finds out it will destroy him," he said.

"I'm absolutely bitterly angry about what has happened. I just want to get over there and be with him in case the worst happens.

"I was in Turkey two years ago and I told Stephen not to go. I hated it ... I'm not saying they are all bad - I know 90 per cent are alright but it's these fanatics. If I knew who was responsible ... I would be proud to kill them."

A spokesman for Ege University Hospital said that Mr Stables sustained fractures and cuts to his legs, has a piece of metal in his skull and is on a mechanical ventilator. Another Briton, a child, was being treated elsewhere, he said.
