Brussels Airport attack: Video shows aftermath of deadly explosions in terminal building

Video footage has emerged showing people running away from Brussels Airport after explosions were heard in the terminal building on Tuesday morning.

According to witnesses, two blasts took place in the departure hall of the Belgian airport, with one occurring near the American Airlines check-in area and another near the Brussels Airlines desk.

The cause of the explosions is not yet known.

Shortly after the airport explosions took place at around 8am, there was another blast at Maalbeek Metro station, near EU buildings.

At least 23 people are feared to have died and several others have been injured.

Belgian media is reporting that 13 people have been killed at the airport. VTM Nieuws is reporting that 10 people have died at Maalbeek airport, although the fatalities have not yet been confirmed.

The terror alert level in Belgium has been raised to the maximum and the public transport system in Brussels is being shutdown.

The airport was evacuated and all flights were cancelled. According to Belga news agency, shots were fired and shots in Arabic were heard before the two explosions at the airport.

In the video footage, people can be heard shouting as they flee the building and an alarm is going off in the background. Grey smoke is seen rising from the building.

The blasts come after Salah Abdeslam, a suspect in the Paris terror attacks, was arrested in Belgium on Friday. The coordinated attacks in November killed 130 people.

Abdeslam has a court hearing on Wednesday. France has requested his extradition but Abdeslam's lawyer says his client will fight the request.
