The selfie craze that sees no sign of abating may have give us a swath of memorable images, yet an event this weekend showed how some trends can lead to tragedy.

In Portugal on Saturday a Polish couple plunged to their deaths while attempting to take a selfie with their children on the edge of a cliff.

The family were on holiday and visiting the cliffs at Cabo da Roca on the west coast of Portugal.

Portuguese authorities are now investigating the incident, although it is believed the couple were taking pictures of themselves when they fell.

Rescue workers had to give up their attempts to recover the body that night due to weather conditions on the Atlantic Ocean.

They eventually found the bodies on Sunday having resumed their search.

Cabo da Roca is a popular destination for tourists in the area and it is the far western edge of Continental Europe.
