Cuban dissident free
Maria Elena Cruz Varela, a dissident poet serving a two-year jail sentence, has been released six months before the scheduled end of her sentence, Reuters reports from Havana. She was jailed in November 1991 with three colleagues on charges of holding illegal meetings, printing clandestine documents and defaming state institutions.
