Darth Vader to stand as Ukrainian presidential candidate to lead nation to the dark side
The Star Wars character is the Ukrainian Internet Party (UIP) candidate
Darth Vader has claimed he wants to become the next president of Ukraine.
The Star Wars baddie, and father of Luke Skywalker, announced his intentions to run as the official candidate of the Ukrainian Internet party (UIP) at a press conference in Kiev on Saturday.
An individual dressed in the movie villain’s black cloak and face mask filed documents to the Ukrainian Central Elections Commission (CEC) be registered as a presidential candidate, Interfax reported.
The Sith Lord was flanked by supporters in Imperial Stormtrooper and Chewbacca costumes.
Dmitry Golubov, leader of the UIP, said in a statement on the party’s website: “After winning intra-party primaries by a landslide, comrade Vader will be our party’s candidate.”
The party said it had paid the required 2.5m hryvnia (£136,000) registration fee for its unusual candidate.
According to local media reports Vader also demanded a plot of land to park his spaceship.
“I alone can make an empire out of a republic, to restore former glory, to return lost territories and pride for this country,” Vader said in a party statement.
The UIP was registered in 2010 – its slogan is “electronic government against bureaucracy” and it wants to create an “electric government” in Ukraine.
The 25 May presidential election and Kiev mayoral vote are taking place against the backdrop of Russia's recent annexation of Crimea, Ukraine's dire economic straits and rumblings of discontent in the country's mainly Russian-speaking eastern provinces.
Businessman Petro Poroshenko is the current presidential favourite.
