Georgia said yesterday that Abkhazian rebels had launched an overnight commando raid on its Black Sea coast and accused Russia of pouring 2,000 extra troops on to its territory, Reuter reports from Tbilisi.

The Georgian leader, Eduard Shevardnadze, told parliament 600 commandos had landed by sea and attacked government forces. Russian television said at least 23 people had been killed in an Abkhazian artillery blitz of the regional centre, Sukhumi.

In Tajikistan, at least 50 members of an armed group that crossed from Afghanistan into the republic yesterday were killed by Russian and Tajik border guards who used helicopters.
