Georgian forces fought skirmishes with rebels from the separatist Abkhaz region in the first fighting between the two sides in six weeks, a Georgian spokesman said yesterday, Reuter reports from Tbilisi. The clash occurred along the Inguri River, which divides the north-western rebel Abkhaz region from the rest of Georgia. Russia threatened to impose sanctions on Abkhazia if its troops crossed the river.
