Irish man dies after falling from balcony in Tenerife
Wednesday 02 January 2013
An Irishman has died after apparently falling from a balcony while on holiday in Tenerife.
It is understood that Robert Delves, in his early 40s, from Rush, north Co Dublin, fell to his death from an apartment on the popular Canary Island.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is helping the family of an Irishman who died in Tenerife.
"We are providing consular assistance," a spokesman said.
It is believed Mr Delves, who worked for his family printing business, was on holiday with his parents and his brother's family.
He was there with his wife Ciara and three young children.
Mr Delves was a popular and respected coach at St Maurs GAA club in Rush.
Owen McGinty, vice-chair of the club, said it was devastated by the tragedy.
"He was a very popular member of the club, and a very popular man locally," he said.
"He was the most inoffensive guy you would ever meet and a very hard worker.
"It's a terrible loss."
The incident took place at El Medano in Granadilla, in the south of the island.
A source at the Civil Guard in Tenerife said: "An ambulance was called to the hotel at 1.30am this morning and paramedics tried to reanimate the 42-year-old holidaymaker but his vital signs were negative.
"Although we are still awaiting the outcome of the investigation, it is thought the accident was caused by a handrail on the balcony which gave way."
