Madrid matadors gored by bulls: San Isidro festival suspended for first time in 35 years
Fight ended when bulls gored two matadors and tossed a third into the air
A major bullfighting event in Madrid has been called off after all three matadors were gored by bulls at the prestigious Las Ventas ring.
The fight, the 12th of the famed San Isidro festival, was stopped after bulls gored two matadors and tossed a third one into the air. Organisers said it was the first time the event had been suspended in 35 years.
The first torero, David Mora, was still being treated in a Madrid hospital Wednesday after being gored and thrown in the air. He sustained injuries to his leg and armpit, in an incident Spanish newspaper El Pais described as "horrific, shocking and chilling".
He is said to be in a serious but not life-threatening condition.
Jimenez Fortes was gored in the right leg and pelvis and Antonio Nazare was injured when he was dragged along by the bull. Both were expected to be released from the hospital on Wednesday evening.
The two bulls were Deslio, a 532 kilogram (1,173-pound) animal from the El Ventorrillo breeding ranch, and the 537 kilogram (1,184-pound) Feten of the Los Chospes ranch.
Approximately 2,000 bullfights are held each year in Spain in a tradition that dates back 4,000 years. Bull fighting was granted heritage status to prevent bans despite international criticism from animal welfare groups.
