Man fights for life after Ibiza balcony fall
A young holidaymaker is fighting for his life after he fell from a hotel balcony while on holiday in Ibiza, his family said today.
Ryan Elley made a spur-of-the-moment decision to join friends for the trip to the Spanish island.
The 20-year-old from Portsmouth, Hampshire, was seriously injured, suffering bleeding on the brain, in the fall from the second-floor balcony of the Jet Apartments in Playa d'en Bossa on Sunday August 8.
Mr Elley was then airlifted to Son Dureta hospital in Palma, Majorca, where he was put into a medical coma.
His father, Simon Elley, who has travelled to be at his bedside, told the Portsmouth News: "Ryan has been heavily sedated and he is in a coma in intensive care.
"He had a massive bleed on one side of his brain and three smaller bleeds on the other side. He will not be able to move anywhere for at least two weeks.
"But there has been some good news because he has not got any worse."
The family are now faced with a £15,000 bill to pay for an air ambulance to bring him back to the UK when he is well enough to travel because he did not take out medical insurance prior to the trip.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman confirmed that its staff are providing consular assistance to the family.
