An old satirical The Onion article has been shared almost as many times in the past 24 hours as in its two-year history, after taking on a new light due to the terrorist attack on fellow satirical publication Charlie Hebdo.
Depicting "the Hebrew prophet Moses high-fiving Jesus Christ as both are having their erect penises vigorously masturbated by Ganesha, all while the Hindu deity anally penetrates Buddha with his fist", the story has added over 80,000 shares since the shootings, insinuating that certain religions are not so concerned by iconoclastic caricatures.
But whether it depicts Mohamed or not, some found a dark irony in the fact that since the blasphemous image was published, another one has indeed resulted in death.
The Onion yesterday produced a sort-of follow-up, the incredibly meta 'It's Sadly Unclear Whether This Article Will Put Lives At Risk' which summed up the confusion among the media over the correct response to the attack on satire, reporting "Following the fatal terrorist attack Wednesday at the offices of French newspaper Charlie Hebdo, sources confirmed this afternoon that it is sadly not yet clear whether this very article will ultimately put human lives at risk."
Nine journalists, two police officers and a maintenance man were killed by masked men around 11.30am yesterday, the two men responsible having reportedly been spotted in Northern France today.Reuse content
