Yasushi Akashi, a senior UN official, has formally advised against air strikes on Serbian or Croatian positions in Bosnia after consultations with UN commanders on the ground, Michael Sheridan reports from Geneva.

Mr Akashi's report to the UN Secretary-General ruled out air strikes on Serbian positions near Sarajevo because of confusion on the battlefield. It said they could not guarantee the opening of Tuzla airport.
