One person was killed and two people were injured when a limpet bomb attached to a car exploded Friday in this northern Spanish Basque city, news reports said.

The bomb blast occurred at 7.40 a.m. (0640 gmt), Spanish National Radio said.

There were no immediate details as to the identity of the victim but the radio said that many military officers lived in the area where the bomb went off. Another radio station, COPE, said the victim appeared to be a member of the Navy.

No group immediately claimed the bomb but it bore all the hallmarks of the Basque separatist group ETA which has killed some 800 people since it began fighting for an independent Basque state in 1968.

ETA has claimed responsibility for killing 23 people since it ended a 14-month cease-fire in Dec. 1999.

In recent weeks, the group is believed responsible for several failed bomb attempts including one earlier this week that targeted a military office in the northern city of Pamplona.
