Six Russian women have been prosecuted for twerking at the site of a World War Two memorial.

Three members of the group were imprisoned for between ten and fifteen days for petty hooliganism, while two had their sentences reduced to fines.

The sixth member was underage and was therefore not charged. Instead, her mother was reprimanded for failing to “carry out measures to ensure the proper physical, intellectual, psychological, spiritual and moral development of the child".

The group performed the dance in front of The Malaya Zemlya memorial which commemorates a battle to free the city of Novorossiysk from the Germans in 1943.

They then posted the video to Youtube to recruit people to their dance school.

Viktoriya Dikaya, the press secretary for the city’s education department, said: “We condemn these women. Every inch of this land is covered in blood. It is inappropriate”.

This sentencing is one in a series of clamp-downs on twerking in Russia. Earlier this month a dance school was shut down after teenagers performed the dance for their parents.
