Schengen deal
Nine EC states agreed yesterday to allow visitors to move freely across their common borders as of 1 December, overcoming French concerns that such a step would unleash a flood of illegal immigration and drug smuggling, AP reports from Madrid. The nine are the so-called Schengen group - all EC countries except Ireland, Denmark and the United Kingdom.
