Tangled mind of a school killer

Teenage gunman was a loner dogged by depression who left a warning in internet chatroom before he massacred 15 people

Tim Kretschmer was a reclusive gun freak who had dozens of airguns on display in his bedroom. He liked to practise with his father's arsenal of 15 pistols and rifles on a firing range in the basement of his home. Officials described the 17-year-old killer yesterday as "well trained in the use of firearms".

But the teenager who, on Wednesday, went on a rampage at his former school and shot dead 15 people, also saw himself as a failure. He was said to have been mobbed by fellow pupils and teachers, suffered fits of depression, had few friends and had visited a psychiatric clinic at least five times to receive treatment.

Eight of his victims were teenage girls; three were women teachers. Unconfirmed reports suggested that Kretschmer had developed a phobia about women after being repeatedly called a failure by a woman teacher, who allegedly told him that he would "end up as a dustman" if his performance at school did not improve.

It emerged yesterday that hours before he walked into the Albertville secondary school and murdered 12 of his victims – with shots from his father's Beretta pistol aimed at their heads – Kretschmer had announced the plan for his bloodbath on the internet.

Kretschmer told a chat room friend called Bernd on a German language website at 2.46am on Wednesday – about six hours before the shooting spree: "Shit Bernd – I've had enough. I've had enough of this horrible life. It's always the same. Everyone laughs at me, nobody recognises my potential."

Kretschmer then added: "I am serious. I've got weapons here. I am going to go to my school tomorrow and do a proper grilling." Yet the gunman's chilling warning went unheeded for at least 12 hours. Police investigators revealed yesterday that "Bernd", Kretschmer's chat room partner, did not believe the warning at first and replied with the initials "LOL" – an internet abbreviation for "laughing out loud".

Heribert Rech, the Interior Minister in the southern German state of Baden-Wurttemberg who is in charge of the investigation into the school shooting, said police had only been alerted to Kretschmer's message on Wednesday afternoon. By then, the gunman had moved outside the school, shot dead another three people, and then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. "His chat room partner was shocked to hear about the shooting spree on the news and told his parents about his message. They then called the police," Mr Rech said.

Later a statement appeared on the Krautchan website saying that "the German press was unfortunately fooled by a forgery". However German police said they were "completely convinced of the veracity of the post".

Kretschmer was allowed to use the guns from the arsenalof a local shooting club near his home, where his father, who is a businessman, was a member. The two also used to practise shooting at targets on a firing range in their basement.

A young man who knew Kretschmer as a child, and who lives nearby, said in an interview yesterday: "He was gun crazy, he kept about 30 airguns that fired plastic pellets in his room. They were stuck on the walls. We used to go out and fire them. He used to keep shooting the pellets at me until it hurt. He didn't seem to know when to stop." Police said Kretschmer's father kept all but one of his guns and 4,600 rounds of ammunition in a safe with an eight-figure combination lock. However, the father kept one gun, a 9mm Beretta pistol, in his bedroom.

Mr Rech said Kretschmer had taken the pistol from his father's bedroom and had somehow been able to open the combination locks on his father's safe to remove more than 200 rounds of ammunition that were used on his shooting spree. A search of the gunman's bedroom showed that he apparently enjoyed violent computer games, such as "Counter Strike", which involves killing people to complete missions.

Kretschmer had been a student at the Albertville school, which he left last last year, for six years. Teachers said he gained average marks in Germany's equivalent of O-levels and had gone on to study business at a private school. They said he had been an "unremarkable" pupil. Apart from shooting, his outside activities included table tennis and weightlifting.

Papers found by police in his bedroom suggested that he was tormented by fits of depression and considered himself to be a failure. A note Kretschmer had addressed to his parents, that was found in his room, spoke of his feelings of "frustration". Another note, addressed to the German army, which concerned his compulsory military service, revealed that Kretschmer had visited a psychiatric clinic five times to receive treatment for depression.

State prosecutors investigating the case said the gunman had told psychiatrists that he wanted to continue treatment at a hospital nearer his home, but had never turned up. Police said his parents had been aware of his depression but had never considered it so serious that it might prompt their son to kill.

"He always used to complain to me about one of his women teachers," one of his neighbours told Germany's populist daily newspaper Bild. "She mobbed him all the time and told him that he would end up as a dustman if he didn't do any better at school. He really hated her, as he did women in general."

The chat-room message

"Bernd, I've had it, I'm sick of this life it's always the same old stuff. Everyone laughs at me, nobody recognises my potential. I'm serious Bernd - I have a weapon here. Early tomorrow morning, I will go to my former school and really toast them. Maybe I'll go too. Keep your ears open, Bernd, you will hear from me tomorrow, remember the name of a place called Winnenden. No reports to the police now, don't worry. I'm just baiting you"

Yes, women and girls to blame for misogynistic bigotry

So very true, wormery!

I mean, let's not blame this young killer for his own exceptional anti-female intolerance and hate to the point he committed brutal collective punishment to those who just happened to share the gender of someone he hated (Of course, his own misogynistic bigotry could not possibly be a factor why he hated this particular teacher so obsessively and disproportionately to her "crime"). Heavens no! That one woman teacher is to blame (I also hear a girl rejected his advances and was killed, so she's also to blame for turning her back on such a gem). If anything, the women and girls committed suicide and murdered the innocent, wonderful bigot!

Oh, and considering that men and boys are not exactly timid when it comes to singling out women and girls for harassment (sexual harassment is rife in schools) and heinous gender violence (e.g., domestic violence, stalking, rape), it would be perfectly acceptable to you, wormery, if a young woman decides to kill off boys and men at a school then, right? I mean, the males would be to blame for her hatred of them, right? Just as blacks were to blame for being lynched in the United States decades back. I mean, those wonderful white supremacists even told blacks that if they just behaved well then there would be no lynchings, but the blacks simply insisted on causing these innocent whites to be fearful of them. And homophobes would stop committing anti-gay violence if those gays would just stop "panicking" them.

Your bigotry towards women and girls is so disturbing, wormery, you went so far as to justify the brutal killing of children! What next, justifying the killing of Jewish children because antisemites believe Jews are to blame for our global recession?! You are beyond shame. May God forgive you for your violent extremist hate, because no one else should. The fact The Independent allows your hate to remain speaks poorly of this paper.
Advertising and Television

I think all the advertising we are subjected to every day makes a lot of people feel inferior. And a lot of people buy into this ' perfect world ' that advertising and TV create and expect others to fit into it. But it's all an illusion and many in today's societies can't differentiate between what is the real world and what is illusory. I threw my Tv away 3 years ago and it's the best thing I've ever done apart from quit smoking. Do we really all need to aspire to dress and behave like the tiny minority of manufactured people we see on TV and ads?? The constant bombardment of people of great looking people having fun times with lots of money is bound to have an effect on some sensitive people in our societies. Where I live, which is a beautiful place, in Far North Queensland , Australia, most of the people are obese, depressed and on medication for it or drinking themselves to death, screwing or lusting after someone else's partner, and frantically consuming to keep themselves happy. And yet they are surrounded by fertile land, untold natural beauty and very little crime or other social problems, beautiful natural surrounds and Ok neighbours. Their cars are not big enough, their children are never happy, the schools aren't good enough, they don't have enough money, they don't have the latetst clothes, their house is in the wrong street, their jobs are boring, their partneres are boring, they never have enough time to exercise and on and on. You get the picture???

There are pages and pages of evidence that the drugs we give kids can cause them to go whacko.

It's so common, there's a list for you. He will be added to the list and what drug he was on. Think about that.

I keep thinking. Is it just about putting dangerous drugs on the market for profit or to literally watch us shoot each other all the time?
Mobbing

'Mobbing' is a word used in Germany, it means bullying, or ganging up on somebody (usually in the workplace, or here in the school context).

I don't believe it is correct to use it in English text in this way - perhaps the author forgot to translate, as it 'sounds' English.

christian mass killer's religion not mentioned but if he was muslim or turkish or bosnian or arab or African you bet his religion and ethnicity would be mentioned.

Both of these mass killers were of white european christian origin as are most serial and parallel killers. Esp the planned serial and parallel killers are generally of white european christian ethnic stock.

The whole world needs to hear Mark right now:

Mark Taylor's Testimony Before the FDA 9/13/2004

I am Mark Allen Taylor and I am a victim of the SSRI antidepressant era. I took six to thirteen bullets in the heart area in the Columbine High School shooting when Eric Harris on Luvox opened fire that now infamous day.

They almost had to amputate my leg and my arm. My heart missed by only one millimeter. I had three surgeries. Five years later I am still recuperating.

I went through all this to realize that SSRI antidepressants are dangerous for those who take them and for all those who associate with those who take them.

I hope that my testimony today shows you that you need to take action immediately before more innocent people like me, and you, do not get hurt or die horrible deaths as a result.

As Americans we should have the right to feel safe and if you were doing your job we would be safe. Why are we worrying about terrorists in other countries when the pharmaceutical companies have proven to be our biggest terrorists by releasing these drugs on an unsuspecting public?

How are we suppose to feel safe at school, at home, on the street, at church or anywhere else if we cannot trust the FDA to do what we are paying you to do? Where were you when I and all of my classmates got shot at Columbine?

You say that antidepressants are effective. So why did they not help Eric Harris before he shot me?

According to Eric they "helped" him to feel homicidal and suicidal after only six weeks on Zoloft. And then he said that dropping off Luvox cold turkey would help him "fuel the rage" he needed to shoot everyone. But he continued on Luvox and shot us all anyway.

So, why did these so called antidepressants not make him better? I will tell you why. It is because they do not work.

We should consider antidepressants to be accomplices to murder.
