The Russian Referendum: What voters will be asked

The questions for tomorrow's referendum are:

1. Do you have confidence in the President of the Russian Federation, B N Yeltsin?

2. Do you approve the socio-economic policies carried out by the President of the Russian Federation and the government of the Russian Federation since 1992?

3. Do you consider it necessary to hold early elections for the president of the Russian Federation?

4. Do you consider it necessary to hold early elections for the People's Deputies of the Russian Federation?

Each question, printed on a separate voting slip, is followed by 'Yes' and 'No'. Voters have to cross out the answer they do not want.

The registered electorate is 105,539,421, according to the Electoral Commission. This excludes the republic of Chechnya, which has declared itself independent.

According to a Constitutional Court ruling, questions one and two are decided by a majority of votes cast, providing the turn-out is at least 50 per cent of the electorate. Questions three and four need a majority of the total electorate.
