Three Britons killed fleeing Dutch police

By John Fahey, Press Association

Three Britons died and a fourth was fighting for his life in a Dutch hospital today after a high-speed crash while escaping from police.

Two men, a 25-year-old and a 28-year-old both from Liverpool, were taken from the crash site in Driel in the early hours of Saturday.

They were allegedly involved with three others who blew up a cash machine at a supermarket in Driel and then fled along the A12 motorway.

Their car overturned as officers pursued.

A 21-year-old Liverpudlian died at the scene.

A 25-year-old, from London, died later that day, according to Dutch police.

And a 27-year-old, also from Liverpool, died in hospital yesterday.

A police spokesman said: "It all started at 3am on Saturday when we got a call about a robbery at an ATM machine at a supermarket in the small village of Driel, not far from Arnhem.

"The men moved rapidly.

"We started a pursuit but it all ended very soon - moments after it began.

"Half an hour later it was reported there was a car crash in the centre of the Netherlands.

"There were five people in the car and there were lots of similarities with the people seen in Driel.

"One man died instantly, the other man died later that day and the third man died yesterday.

"The other two are being treated in hospital near Utrecht.

"We were not able to have a decent conversation with the gentlemen - they were badly injured.

"We hope to speak to them soon.

"We want to know what five men from Britain are doing in the small village of Driel.

"We hope to hear from them soon but at the moment they are not physically able to comment.

"One man is under arrest for theft but the other person was not fit enough to know he was going to be arrested.

"Thousands of euros were taken but we cannot give the exact amount.

"We deny a link between the pursuit causing the crash."

Money, covered in anti-theft dye, was recovered inside the car with the men.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "Five British Nationals were involved in a road traffic accident on Saturday morning in the town of Driel, Netherlands.

"We can confirm the death of three British nationals and the hospitalisation of two British nationals.

"The local police are investigating the incident. We are providing consular assistance to those involved."

They were probably on a gap year, exploring Europe, before taking up places to read economics at Oxford.

Why do stereotypes always seem to come true? Surprise, surprise, they were from Liverpool. How are you ever gonna shake off the image, people of Liverpool, if you keep turning out people who get in the news by stealing? If I were a Liverpuddlian, I'd be livid. There must be something you can do for yourselves to counter the stereotype you fall prey to.

what a moron you are....so nobody anywhere else steals except Liverpudlians? not London based bankers for example or those lovely Kray twins from the East End...or were they Liverpudlians too?

All from Liverpool if you exclude the Londoners. Or did you not read about the Londoners?

maybe they were NuLabour supporters who were trying to get some funds for the coming election, how silly they were, they forgot that a) continental police don´t do softly softly and b) the roads strangely go the other way round.
R.I.P. lads
P.S. at least they won´t appear on the crime statistics for the UK so GB can brag again

sadly it would appear that neither of the 2 Daily Mail/Sun readers - euro-zone and fourpie - can read, but then in view of their attitudes that surprises me not....BNP members eh lads? and i was actually born on Merseyside so that persumably makes me
a) stupid
b) a thief
and to be pedantic (sorry about the use of big words) the roads in Europe don't go the other way round, whatever that's supposed to mean - they drive on the right not the left
and how kind of euro_zone to wish the dead peace, albeit sarcastically, presumably he would have stealing made a capital crime? what a sad little small-minded person he is, And the mocking of Nulabour and his inability to distinguish between the UK and GB....makes it possible he doesn't actually live in the UK...so how about you two fine examples of humanity letting us know where YOU come from, we can all go and live there because it's obviously a crime free area!

I don´t read the Daily Mail, neither do I read the Sun, don´t belong or sympathise with the BNP, live in Bavaria, Germany , am a british citizen, UK= United Kingdom, GB= Gordon Brown. Pretty much crime free, don´t lock my cars up at night, neither do I lock my shed to protect my lawnmower, if my children forget their toys in the garden they are still there a week or more later, no vandalism here, am fluent in three languages ( oops! big word), anything else you´d like to say, or ask?

When I first heard this story on the radio today, the first thing I thought was .. "I bet they are from Liverpool" ... well what a suprise .. (and one from london I did see that)

unfortuately I am from Liverpool (luckily we escaped from the place) .. and I already know the reaction from the people who live in liverpool .. "oh I cant believe it could have been people from this city" .. odd how they are always suprised.

But have no fear all the scousers out there ... at least the local radio will tell you your the best city in the world.

I seen it on channel 4 news and said to a friend sitting next to me, I bet they are from Liverpool. Only scousers would be in Holland robbing (and one Londoner). Holland is a haven for Scouse criminals. Mainly because it is the main distribution point for drugs in Europe and Scouse criminals are major players in the European drug trade. My main guess would be that these lads were putting together a kitty for some cocaine to bring back to sell in Liverpool. Still, they didn't deserve to be killed.
