KINSHASA (AP) - Zaire's national conference ended yesterday and elected an archbishop who has become a symbol of opposition to the President, Mobutu Sese Seko, to return the nation to democratic rule.

Monsignor Monsengwo Pasinya's election as president of the High Council of the Republic comes as a power struggle between Mr Mobutu and the Prime Minister, Etienne Tshisekedi, threatens to turn violent. Mr Tshisekedi's premiership was forced on Mr Mobutu by pro- democracy protests.
