PARIS (Reuter) - A policeman has been charged with the manslaughter of a Moroccan youth whose death at the weekend sparked riots in southern France.

Daniel Marty was charged with shooting Hassan Ben Hamed, 17, on Sunday, while the youth was under arrest for stealing a car. Mr Marty's lawyer told French radio that the policeman's gun went off accidentally as Hamed tried to escape. Mr Marty was released and allowed back to work.

About 100 people of North African origin burnt cars and smashed shop windows in the town of Beziers on Monday in the second day of riots after Hamed's death. Police made five arrests and calm was restored by early evening.
