Heavy gunfire in Kinshasa

KINSHASA (Reuter) - Heavy shooting broke out afresh in the Zairean capital last night, just as life appeared to be returning to normal after riots which cost at least 80 lives.

Much of the firing appeared to come from the direction of Kokolo military camp, south-west of the city centre. It houses soldiers who ran amok on Thursday and Friday, looting homes, shops and warehouses after being paid in banknotes made worthless by an opposition boycott. It was not clear whether the shooting indicated an upsurge in looting or battles between rival groups of soldiers. Troops loyal to President Mobutu Sese Seko crushed last week's riots, leaving bodies littering the streets.
