VILNIUS (AFP) - Commentators agreed that an economic crisis, political bickering and poor timing helped to tip the vote broadly in favour of Lithuania's former Communist Party, which won the first post- Soviet elections on Sunday. The nationalist Sajudis party of President Vytautas Landsbergis has been hit by factional splits.

Provisional figures gave 44.7 per cent to the Democratic Labour Party, as the pro-reform Communist Party is now called, and only 19.8 per cent to Sajudis. There will be run-off polls in 39 districts on 8 November.
