The UN Secretary-General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, asked the Security Council to endorse a compromise plan on a permanent name for the newly independent Macedonia, AFP reports from New York.

The name would be the Republic of New Macedonia. If Greece and Macedonia favour a proposed treaty confirming their current frontier and establishing co-operation between Athens and Skopje, mediators will work as quickly as possible to get the two countries to sign it, Mr Boutros-Ghali told the Security Council.
