CAPE TOWN (Reuter) - Nelson Mandela's African National Congress yesterday nominated a pro-apartheid right-winger, Pieter Groenewald, to head a parliamentary committee on defence. Mr Groenewald, an MP for the Freedom Front, is a former executive of the state-controlled Armscor weapons company and a part-time officer in the army. He was elected unopposed at the meeting of the committee.

The Freedom Front's leader, General Constand Viljoen, whose white- supremacist party holds nine of the 400 seats in the National Assembly, said the ANC decision to cede control of the committee was more than just a symbolic gesture.
