Syrian extremists cut off alleged thief’s hand in public – and post live updates to Twitter
Horrific images appeared to show the radical Islamist group Isis carrying out the punishment in the Aleppo province
Gruesome images have emerged on Twitter that appear to show a Syrian militant group posting live updates as they cut off the hand of a suspected thief.
The photographs were reportedly circulated by a host of jihadi social media accounts, which said that the incident occurred on Friday in a rebel-controlled region of the Aleppo province.
In the images, a blindfolded man is being held down with his hand placed on an apparently purpose-built rough wooden table with a padded underside.
The militants, some with their faces covered and one carrying a large sword, appear to pose for the cameras as the alleged thief is braced for his ordeal.
A later photo shows the man lying back from the table, his hand severed.
While it was not immediately possible to verify the accounts published by various Twitter feeds, “Jihad News” said the alleged thief, in the north Syrian town of Maskanah, had confessed to his crimes and requested the form of punishment according to strict traditional religious codes.
Dozens of militants and other observers apparently watched on as the punishment took place, some posting the images to Twitter The account claimed he had “asked that his hand be cut off to cleanse his sins”.
The punishment was carried out by an al-Qa’ida-affiliated group known as Isis, or the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.
Mainly composed of fighters from outside of Syria, Isis is widely regarded as the most radical Islamist rebel group fighting against the forces of President Bashar al-Assad.
Isis controls much of rebel-held areas in the north of the country. In the city of Raqqa, it has demanded that Christians pay a levy in gold and curb displays of their faith in return for protection.
It has also reportedly banned Christians from owning weapons and from selling pork or wine to Muslims or drinking wine in public.
