LYNNDIE ENGLAND and CHARLES GRANER: England, a guard, and her fellow guard and lover, Graner, appeared in shocking photographs of abuse of inmates at the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad. Both were among those subsequently charged over the affair and faced courts martial. Graner was jailed for 10 years and England for three. Both claimed that they were encouraged to carry out the abuse by senior officers. England gave birth to Charles Graner's son, christened Carter Allan England, in October 2004. She was paroled in March 2007 after serving 521 days and will receive a dishonourable discharge in September. She has claimed, in various interviews, that she was forced into her actions by Graner. Graner himself married another fellow Abu Ghraib guard, Megan Ambuhl, who had herself pleaded guilty to abuse charges, in 2005.
