Muluzi sworn in
BLANTYRE - Bakili Muluzi was sworn in as Malawi's president and moved to erase the worst excesses of Kamuzu Banda's 30-year rule. He announced freedom for all political prisoners and the closure of three prisons allegedly used for torture. A Muslim, he thanked the country's Roman Catholic bishops for 'starting Malawi's democratisation process'. Reuter
