Greenpeace blockaded four whaling boats in a Norwegian port yesterday. But the group withdrew after a few hours, saying the risk of violencewas too high.

The boats had put into harbour near the southern town of Kristiansand after bad weather interrupted their hunt. About 40 Greenpeace activists used underwater ropes and swimmers to trap the boats. There were scuffles between the two sides and three arrests. Nicholas Schoon
