The militant Islamic movement Hamas, in its first official statement since the elections, vowed yesterday to go on resisting Israel so long as it occupied Palestinian land. The group did not say how it would resist and there was no mention of military attacks or jihad.

Hamas, opposed to the PLO- Israel peace deal, claimed responsibility for the four suicide bombings within Israel in February and March.

After Mr Netanyahu's victory, Hamas leaders gave warning of renewed violence if he did not honour peace deals with the Palestinians.
