North Korea appointment
Kim Jong Il, son and heir-apparent of North Korea's leader, Kim Il Sung, was elected to the top military post yesterday, Reuter reports from Seoul. The state Korean Central News Agency said the younger Mr Kim had taken over from his father as chairman of the National Defence Commission, a move that consolidates his position as the head of the military.
