Mario Cuomo, the best-known candidate for the vacancy on the US Supreme Court, formally withdrew from consideration before Bill Clinton had narrowed his list of prospects, AP reports from Washington.

In a letter to the President, Mr Cuomo said he wanted to remain as governor to help New York's economic recovery.
