The government of Algeria, beset by Islamic extremist violence, resumed exploratory talks with opposition parties, but the former ruling National Liberation Front (FLN) boycotted the meeting, AFP reports from Algiers.

The FLN gave no reason for staying away, but has been unhappy with the government's timetable for a three-year transitional period leading to fresh multi-party elections for parliament.
