Progress for EU and Canada

Brussels - The European Union yesterday accused Canada of ignoring international fishing rules and questioned its record in conserving threatened stocks - the issue at the heart of a bitter dispute with Spain. The EU's Fisheries Commissioner, Emma Bonino, called on Canada to enter talks on a final settlement, but said she was "deeply worried about the aggressive attitude of the Canadian authorities". Canada's Fisheries Minister, Brian Tobin, said the Spanish fishing fleet was "continuing to fish out of control". But EU and Canadian officials held further talks on fisheries conservation and controls in Brussels and both sides said progress was being made. Reute
