Russia's Environment Ministry confirmed yesterday that a Russian tanker was dumping nuclear waste into the sea north of Japan but said international authorities were given prior warning of the move, Reuter reports from Moscow.

The deputy Environment Minister, Amirkhan Amirkhanov, told the Interfax news agency 'interested governments' had also been told about the dumping and another ministry official said the level of radiation in the waste was very low.

Greenpeace said a Russian navy vessel started dumping the liquid waste into the Sea of Japan, 295 nautical miles west of the Japanese island of Hokkaido, yesterday morning.
