Saudi Arabia has freed about 40 Shia Muslim political prisoners who had been in jail for at least five years, according to a Washington- based group, The International Committee for Human Rights in the Gulf and the Arabian Peninsula, AFP reports from Nicosia.

The Shias had been jailed for 'opposition political activity' and held in maximum- security prisons in Riyadh and Dammam, it said.
