Schroeder to retire

Washington - The Democrat Patricia Schroeder of Colorado, the longest serving woman member of the US House of Representatives and one of its best known liberals, announced yesterday she was retiring after 22 years on Capitol Hill, writes Rupert Cornwell. Meanwhile Jesse Jackson Jr, 30, son of the civil rights leader, won Tuesday's Democratic primary in a central Chicago district, virtually ensuring himself a Congress seat.
