Girls told no: Video highlights sexist inequality women face on global scale

'None of us are equal until all of us are equal'

An "incredibly powerful" video released by two campaign groups is calling for people to take action against global sexism.

The ONE Campaign and Don't Panic have teamed up to highlight the inequality women face throughout their lives, pinpointing that women affected the most are those living in extreme poverty.

According to statistics released by the two groups, one in three women worldwide will experience physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime, and nearly a third of girls in some developing countries are married by the age of 15.

The video - called Poverty is Sexist - centres around the idea that females of all ages are told 'no' all over the world, every single day.

Various scenarios are showcased, from a girl being born with the negative connotation of it 'not' being a boy, to a child being told they can't focus on their own interests, and another girl being forced into an arranged marriage.

"None of us are equal, until all of us are equal," it finishes with, asking people to take a stand. Each scene is based on an issue facing females in today's society, the campaign said.

"You don’t need to be a girl in Uganda to understand what it would mean to be held back from school because you have your period," explained ONE's creative director, Meagan Bond.

"You don’t need to be a woman in Congo to imagine what it would feel like to be denied a bank loan because you don’t have a husband.

"Our message with this campaign and this film is that it’s time to stop leaving the women who are the most disenfranchised out of the conversation."
