A police intelligence officer tracking Moslem militant assassins was killed in a shoot-out on Monday as he tried to arrest two suspects in a marketplace in Upper Egypt, security sources said.

One suspect escaped. The other was seriously wounded and captured.

The dead officer was Lieutenant Imam Khattab. Two subordinates and three civilians were wounded in the shoot-out at al-Badari, a militant stronghold 375 km (235 miles) south of Cairo.
