Nelson Mandela, leader of the African National Congress, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a Nobel laureate, called yesterday for action - not words - to halt violence in South Africa, Reuter reports from Johannesburg.

Archbishop Tutu told a peace conference arranged by religious leaders that discussions were 'going around in circles' while black people walked in fear of everyday danger.
