The Spanish Prime Minister, Felipe Gonzalez, said he was ready to resign if corruption charges against his Socialist Party were proved, Reuter reports from Madrid.

Mr Gonzalez was speaking at a Madrid University conference, where he was jeered by students angered by corruption accusations against the Socialists. Questioned about specific charges of illegal financing of the party before the 1989 general election, he said: 'I will assume all the responsibilities which fall to me, and if that requires me to resign, I am ready to.'
