Workmen dig up 4,500 skulls

Kigali - Thousands of decomposed corpses - victims of last year's genocide - have been unearthed in Rwandan mass graves discovered in the grounds of Kigali's central hospital. Government officials said yesterday that some 4,500 skulls had been counted in 20 mass graves found by workmen repairing the hospital's drainage system last Friday. "This is the reality of Rwanda; graves with so many bodies we can only only count the skulls," said the Rwanda army's chief political commissar, Colonel Frank Mugambage. Among the bodies were the remains of Frederic Nzamurambaho, the leader of the Social Democratic Party. The genocide last year targeted both minority Tutsis and politically moderate Hutus.
