Derelict churches, forgotten homes, and entire villages buried by sand: Stunning images capture the world’s eeriest abandoned locations
Over 300 villagers live in the forbidden Exclusion Zone, after having returned to live in their own homes after the disaster. Days after the disaster they were relocated to many locations over the Soviet Union. The 'Samosele' or self settlers, a name given to them by authorities, are living as before, living off the fertile albeit radioactive land. They harvest the land growing wheat, mushrooms, onions, beetroot and their own home brew vodka called 'Samahonka.'
