Simon Carr: Abusing leaders is a person's right
Politics happens when you start acting out of hatred of your enemies
Are certain sketch-writers "abusing the facilities" of Parliament, and should they have their access restricted until they adopt a more respectful attitude to MPs? The idea gets ventilated now and again and has surfaced in this season's issue of Order, Order! (It's the newsletter of the Association of Former Members of Parliament, one of Britain's most niche publications).
It sounds a bit drastic but, then again, cynicism can be corrosive of democratic values. It encourages apathy and disengagement with the political process. Mockery distracts people from the serious business of public spending which affects the... I'm boring myself now. I did try.
Most national daily newspapers keep a sketch-writer. Each of us has a different style and each does different things according to temperament. But it's fair to say that none of our contracts include the words "balanced reporting", "courtesy at all times" or "expenses".
But there they are, our West Wing MPs, following their noble calling. You ask them why they went into politics and they cannot answer without using the words "to make the world a better place". Then they open up the paper and see one of their most eminent members described as having "a face like an angry haemorrhoid". How can that be right? Is it even legal? Aren't there laws against hate speech?
Actually, the "Mitre'd Hog" defence may not last much longer in Britain. I came across the phrase doing my special paper on satire back at university. An unpopular bishop visiting one of the colleges in the 14th century had a parchment nailed to his door with these words written on it: "Hail, Mitre'd Hog!" The succinctness of that phrase was very powerful, I found. It can still make me laugh.
There has been a long history of vulgar abuse in England, particularly against our leaders and rulers. It's something to do with personal rights for the low born (and that comes from the seventh century with King Ine's laws, so it is one of England's founding traditions). The cartoons in the 18th century would have had a Frenchman in the Bastille. Queen Victoria suggested she might abdicate if the raillerie didn't stop.
But, in point of fact, I made a decision to be less rude some years ago. I'm not sure if it shows. The interesting thing is to show how they do it. That is, how they do it to each other, and how they do it to us.
Today, the Government is more powerful than William the Conqueror. No monarch has ever entertained such ambitions – the health, education and retirement of the whole population – and equalising our lives' outcomes at the same time. No peacetime government has ever spent so much of our money. And if 5 per cent of them went in to make the world a better place, I bet the rest went in because they hated the mess the other lot were making.
Thus, politics is what happens when you start acting out of hatred of your enemies more than love of your friends (subtitled "Gordon and his 10p debacle"). So, whatever attitude we are supposed to adopt towards our political class, "a magnificent body of men and women doing a difficult job under impossible conditions" isn't the first one that comes to mind.

In Australia some people have spent time behind bars for "sedition", New Labour would love to get that one on the statute books and I fear that this is an opening salvo to resurrect this dead duck once again.
Our media is poisoning our society. See them. Read their articles masquerading as news and do your own research then see how they are either ignorant or deliberately misleading.
Stop buying and reading this tripe and read books and "boring" newspapers that have ony dry facts in them. Then make your own mind up. Its a burden and not nearly as "satisfying" to the baser side of human nature but if you want to save the world I suggest you start
More abuse of journalists please, in the papers. Why not start with your figurehead, the loathsome witch hunter general Mr John Humphreys. Lets play back his output and ask (interrogate) him to account for it.
By the way which Labour spin-doctor are you?
In fact I am just a regular citizen trying to think skeptically about the narratives of our time. And I am sickened by the distorion passed off as news.
No, all media should NOT be biased. Opinion and comment sections should be biased, the news sections should not.
It is the total loss of separation between news and opinion that is the poison I talk of.
There is no news anymore, just sensationalist witch hunting drivel that plays to the basest instincts of the masses.
As this received wisdom becomes mainstream and reality becomes increasingly distant great disasters befall that society. History is riddled with examples.
Still, you are enjoying yourself so I suppose I am impolite to mention it.
Dr Goebbels...
Disrespect for authority and individuals is endemic to the Anglo sphere, it is an essential part of our heritage and culture. I find it hard to stomach the pomposity of politicians in a world where they think it appropriate to demand that our Queen makes economies whilst they steal from the public purse and think it right that she and the Royal Family accept abuse from the Tabloids whilst they are immune.
No, I think not and particularly as these are probably the most lack lustre generation of politicians seen in the Commons since the Rump Parliament. This is not enhanced by the Party Whip system and Prime Ministerial Patronage that has turned the inhabitants of the Treasury benches into a load of Uriah Heeps. They are a totally talentless bunch of habitual liars with over sized egos and limited intelligence who really need to return to the ponds they came from where they can indulge in their preferred lifestyles down in the primeval soup.
Having thus above extolled their virtues, I will decline to indulge in illuminating their bad points.
I enjoyed the history, but must protest the comparison made between the Treasury personnel and Uriah Heap. I would trust him more...
However it does work both ways, some newspapers are noted for their factual reporting, others definitely are not!
The gutter press has always thrived on sensational headlines like BERT HEPPLETHWAITE BEATS HIS WIFE, in very small print it mentions (at Monopoly!). The retractions to the reported untruths they have published from the previous day are always under the Greyhound Racing results on page 23, never in headlines on the front page.
Don't expect any improvements on reporting as the internet Blogs are even worst.
The public will endure almost anything, as long as it can mock Parliament--I don't find that very satisfactory. Parliamentary recesses are so long, one must wonder how the country might cope worse, if Parliament was closed for eight months of the year and put on quarter pay?
Even If you are allowed Why dont you say this in front of them. Why do you preach abou this?. You are a hopless case gone bababa googoo a bloody black sheep in the swine flu case. Where were you bonr? Dead sea? Do you eat pig or dog. Oh how I hate you. Remember we have the right but there are places and times. My wife has baked a cake poisoned... for me... I am sending this to you. You see this is smartness ..you live long in this way ..bye
I thank you
