Yasmin Alibhai-Brown: Celebrities don't deserve this hatred
Monday, 25 August 2008
Madonna's world concert tour started with a whimper in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. It didn't sell out. Shock! Horror! As she toned up vigorously the following dawn, I imagine her killing the punch bags and smashing her long-suffering treadmill. That is if she feels this was the first tumble of her fall back on to the rocky, inclement spot where ex-celebs lie still. It is the payback for too much fame and extravagant adoration.
Looked at differently, however, the night confirmed Madonna is quite, quite extraordinary. With steely ambition, after decades she still thrives in the celebrity jungle replete with snapping predators and poisonous reptiles, more perilous than ever before. (Is she happy though?) The fittest survive through superhuman effort and there aren't many of them.
The rest, you watch as they swagger then stagger, sometimes vanish from sight, or, like Anthea Turner, lurk on the edges, reeking of self pity. Some slowly disintegrate, naked in front of our eyes, even when at the top of the fame tree. Amy Winehouse is the latest casualty. Others are kicked away to relative obscurity by amoral market forces. And so it has come to pass that Trinny and Susannah are watched no more.
Delighted commentators ( themselves desperate for celeb status) have penned unseemly obituaries of these two posh ladies who, in truth, did little harm to anyone. In fact from their earlier programmes, I learnt some sartorial tricks to enhance my best bits and elegantly hide the rest. Yet some malevolent maggots call on their blogs for the two to be hanged or worse. In comes the gay ( in both senses) and stylish Gok Wan, who presents How to Look Good Naked, again a good friend to those of us who feel physically flawed. When will they carry out his lithe corpse you wonder?
Way back in 1989, John Updike wrote: "Celebrity is a mask that eats into the face." Prescient words for the hideous Eighties, even more so for this century. Although it was ever thus – Byron, Oscar Wilde, Rita Hayworth, Diana etc, etc – there are vastly more celebs today, many talentless but nevertheless hideously popular. Like the unfortunate Jade, who was just informed on TV that she has cancer. The glut demands rapid turnovers and self immolation.
At the Edinburgh festival last week, I saw Matthew Bourne's Dorian Gray, a beautiful and perfect, wordless essay on these lives and times, in dance. A male supermodel who looks like Beckham, has it all, breaks it all, then those who touch him and finally himself. On the set, posters of his face look down on us and a large replica of Damian Hirst's diamond skull revolves, casting light on the beautiful and damned.
None of this is inevitable. Some who make it do manage to keep their personal integrity. Think of Helen Mirren, David Tennant, Stephen Berkoff (whose On The Waterfront also had audiences rapt in Edinburgh), Juliet Stephenson, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow. They don't need constant public exposure to feel they matter. Tragically, too many others do.
In Andrew O'Hagan's affecting novel Personality, based on the life of child star Lena Zavaroni, who died of anorexia, a fictionalised Hughie Green describes a meeting with Marilyn Monroe who asks him if he thinks she is beautiful. He replies: "Honey the whole world thinks you're beautiful, but the question is what do you think?" That, indeed is the question, and one rarely asked by our fast-rising and falling celebs.

Ok then, apologies sara. I did sense some of your comments seemed a bit extreme.
I was not trying to turn this into a male vs female, sexism row(as others have) I was just trying to put across the point that so much of the trashy media and celebrity worship is blamed on greedy, irresponsible male journos, when there are many female media types who are as to blame as anyone. My pet hate is the way that the exploitation of young women, their sexualisation and the self harming, eating disorders that breed through society as a direct result is blamed on male editors(nuts, heat etc) when in reality the more acceptible!! fashion mags etc are equally to blame. Its just easier to point the finger at men!
Also as a dad of a 3 yr old daughter and the older brother of an 18 yr old sister, I get very disheartened at the type of women who are put on a pedestal to be admired by young girls...Jordan,Kerry Katona and other such trash. There are so many great female role models! Look up to them!!

Hysterical toy-throwing Sara - self-hating causes low selfy steam y'know. Learn to live with yourself and move on - some men love idiots and I'm sure you'll find one in the next decade or so to put up with you...

Oh, and I don't hate men. I have a dislike for idiots though.

Mark - There is a certain poster on here who likes to pretend to be other ppl to back-up his points.
Just because I am female, doesn't mean I like all females; so to try and use Jordan or Colleen as an insult, just makes no sense. The Rooney/Collen point was to imply they are both exactly the same. He kicks a ball, imho an overvalued talent.
If anything I wish they'd bugger off as it give ammunition to certain ppl. But, in all seriousness, they can do what they want, I couldn;t care less about celebrities.
Which is why turning this into a gender argument is stupid, as you're arguing with the wrong girl. I have never read a heat magazine in my life - i prefer New Scientist.
My original point was that celebrities open their door to judgement and hatred when they seek out attention - are we ok to give the sexism thing a rest?

"Over 90% of the sex trade is a direct result of women being abused by men."
Oh yeah? And let me guess, that figure was invented by the fawcett society or some other collection of misandrists and bitter women. Sara you fool - the women GET PAID! Surely it's the men who've gotta pay for porn and prozzies who are expolited?
"think what you like - just dont expect to find a decent girlfriend any time soon!"
Again with the usual catty girly insults -c an't sustain an argument withour resorting to trying to hurt a man with snide sexual insults. Yawn Sara sweetie. And please do not assume you are a decent girlfried with your manhating attitudes. YOur comment is also sexist, judging some women are not decent. You sexist womanhater Sara. Traitor to the sisterhood!

Oh yes coleen. Rich footballer boyfriend, forge a career directly through his fame whilst living it up on his fortunes. What a shining example to all the young girls!! GIRL POWER!!!

Wow.... just watch those toys come flying out of the pram. Not slating all women sara if you can read through your red mist. Just asking womanhood to take a bit of responsibility for worlds evils, instead of decietfully placing it all on mens doorsteps. We've been big enough to take the flak for all our errors (god knows there are enough of them) This isnt a male v female 12 rounder, just a bit of honest banter, play the game!!!
PS I have a wonderful fiancee(trainee solicitor, don't you know) so won't be looking for a girlfriend anytime soon thanks, but cheers for looking out for me!!

so rooney rather than colleen then.
i'd rather mine were doctors or lawyers. but whatever floats your boat. you also seem to foret that the majority of media is still controlled by the old boy's club. not females.

Also, going back to one of your earlier points sara. I hope and pray that my kids turn out to be an "oaf" as you delightfully observe, kicking around a leather sphere as opposed to some air headed, vaccuos bint whose main concern during their pitiful existence is what pair of shoes they're being told to buy, who just got voted off Big brother and at what age it may turn out to be a wise career decision to get oneself up the duff!!! For want of a better expression!!!! And these wonderful values are placed into thier precious minds by....Male editors/journos???? Nope..try again!!!

Whatever guys. carry on thinking that if you like, there's no point in arguing with people that seem to hold 'women' in such contempt that they get the blame for everything, even though they are more stupid and live of other's money (humvee)]
think what you like - just dont expect to find a decent girlfriend any time soon!
