Mogs have taken over from dogs as the world’s No 1 pet

It’s 10pm - do you know where your moggy is? Wildlife campaigner calls for cat curfew

The claws are out for cats who are free to roam at night. The wildlife campaigner Rosie Catford (no, really) of the Wildlives Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Essex has come out in favour of a cat curfew, of the kind already seen in some parts of the US and Australia, in a bid to save some of the “200 million birds and small animals killed by domestic cats every year in Britain”.

The latest star of the BBC is a golden retriever called Miss Molly

Google, Amazon, The BBC: Office dogs are giving us paws for thought

It seems the latest star of the BBC is a golden retriever called Miss Molly. If you caught the politics show This Week you would have noticed that the  10-month-old dog was given free rein of the studio and so decided to have a wander around the set. She even had a snooze in the lap of guest David Starkey and cuddled up to Terry Wogan.

Haatchi: He might not be a cuddly puppy or a lovely labrador, but this Anatolian shepherd dog has a heart of gold (despite, sob, losing his leg and tail after being tied to train tracks). He’s the constant companion of seven-year-old Owen Hopkins, who suffers from a rare genetic condition. If Haatchi doesn’t sound angelic enough, he and Owen spend their spare time raising money for a number of charities. Give that dog a bone.

Cat lovers of the world unite and take co-ordinates

Do you love maps? Do you love cats? If so, check out the Zoological Society of London’s latest promotional wheeze, which combines the two. Catography, if you will. The idea is that in the run up to the opening of London Zoo’s new Tiger Territory area (a £3.6m enclosure where endangered  Sumatran tigers will be living) on the 22 March, cat fans can add the location and name of their moggy to an interactive map of the world.

Part-time pooches for time-poor dog lovers

There are few things nicer than walking a dog and I'll happily borrow a friend's canine for a stomp around the park. Sadly like many nine-to-five officer workers, renters and cramped townies it wouldn't be fair of me to own a dog. This is a shame. I grew up with dogs (a mutt called Ziggy, then a Jack Russell called Mini) but haven't had the joy of walking my own since leaving home 10 years ago.
